About Pentane

Primarily, pentane is used to create a blowing agent which is then used to create a foam known as polystyrene. Polystyrene is used to make insulation materials for refrigerators and heating pipes. As well, pentane is used in geothermal power stations as a binary fluid, due to its low boiling point (36oC).

Guidance: Dry Chemical fire suppression is generally recommended for Pentane (C5H12). *Please consult your raw material manufacturer's safety data sheet (SDS) and your local authority having jurisdiction to verify the most adequate fire suppression extinguisher for your specific storage or use.

Additional extinguishing notes: Water, dry chemical, chemical foam, CO2 or alcohol resistant foam.

Always confirm extinguishing agents against the manufacturer SDS and your authority having jurisdiction before specifying a rental building fire-suppression package.

Storage & segregation guidance

Compliant storage and rental solutions for Pentane should account for its listed hazards (Flammable Liquids Category 2), climate control needs (<50 C), and segregation requirements. PENTANE is incompatible with strong oxidizers. It is also incompatible with strong acids, alkalis, and oxygen. Mixtures with chlorine gas have produced explosions. It will attack some forms of plastics, rubber, and coatings.
